Many women who are unhappy with the shape, position and/or size of their breasts are also concerned by the appearance of their nipples and areolas. This small yet central feature can play an important role in the overall appearance of the breasts. The nipple-areolar complex is a topic that frequently comes up in Dr. George Sanders’ patient consultations. Here, the Los Angeles plastic surgeon discusses the cosmetic procedures available to address the nipple and areola.
Nipple Lift for Sagging Nipples
A common concern that women have about their breasts is the position of their nipples. Nipples that hang low or point southward (clinically known as ptosis) can be a result of several factors, including genetics, pregnancy and aging. Nipple ptosis correction, often done during breast lift and breast reduction, can lift the nipples to a more aesthetically pleasing and youthful position on the breast mound. Nipple lift can be performed on both breasts or just one to improve symmetry of the nipple position.
Nipple Reduction for Overly Prominent Nipples
Overly prominent nipples can occur in women after breastfeeding or as a normal variant of breast development. In any case, unusually prominent nipples, called hypertrophic nipples, can appear prominent even under clothing and lead to painful chafing and irritation. Nipple reduction to correct nipple hypertrophy can be performed using several techniques to create a smaller, less pendulous and more attractive nipple. The procedure can be performed as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with breast augmentation, breast lift or breast reduction.
Improvement of Overly Large or Asymmetrical Areolas
Asymmetrical, overly large or stretched out areolas (the circular pigmented skin that surrounds the nipple) can be a result of pregnancy, weight gain or genetics. Surgical correction of overly large areolas involves removing some of the skin adjacent to or within the areola and suturing it in order to create a more attractive and natural appearance. This procedure can be performed alone or during breast lift or breast reduction. It can also be completed during nipple lift or reduction.
