Why People Get a Lip Augmentation
There are several reasons why you may want to get lip augmentation, including:
- Natural Enhancement – Lip augmentation has the power to transform your lips into a fuller, more voluminous set but also looks completely natural when done right.
- Better Facial Balance – If you have naturally thin or small lips that don’t quite fit with your other features, achieving fuller lips through lip augmentation can balance and complement your appearance.
- Improved Confidence – You will no doubt feel more confident and self-assured after attaining more voluminous lips that you love.
- Simple, Non-Surgical Options – Dr. Sanders offers non-surgical lip augmentation options at his SILK Medical Spa that are more affordable and minimally invasive.

The Procedure Process Explained
Your lip augmentation procedure process is dependent upon the type of procedure you choose. At his practice in the San Fernando Valley, Dr. Sanders offers two lip augmentation options: injectable lip augmentation or surgical lip augmentation. Here is what you can expect for each regarding consultation, preparation, surgery, and recovery.
The Consultation
Your initial consultation is where you will share your concerns and cosmetic goals with Dr. Sanders so he can better understand your vision and recommend the best course of treatment for you. This is also a great opportunity to get to know Dr. Sanders and his team, and tour the SILK Medical Spa, where your treatment may take place.
If you have any questions for Dr. Sanders or concerns regarding the procedure, this is the best time to discuss them. Dr. Sanders wants to ensure you feel comfortable moving forward with treatment and trust in his ability to deliver exceptional results.
What Should I Do in Preparation?
Preparation for your treatment will depend on the type of lip augmentation you are having. If you are undergoing surgical lip augmentation, Dr. Sanders will provide you with detailed preparation instructions to ensure you are ready for surgery.
If you get lip fillers, preparation for your treatment is minimal. Generally, Dr. Sanders asks his lip filler patients to avoid blood thinners, certain medications and supplements, alcohol, smoking, specific topicals (like retinol), and certain self-care techniques before their treatment. He will discuss these specifics with you in more detail at your consultation.
What is Surgery Like?
Injectable lip augmentation is a straightforward procedure that involves injecting the lip area with a safe filler to add volume, fullness, and shape. Before the injections, a topical anesthetic will be applied to your lips to minimize any discomfort. Depending on the amount of filler you need to achieve your cosmetic goals, this process takes around one hour to complete.
During surgical lip augmentation, Dr. Sanders places small silicone implants in specific lip locations to add permanent volume and fullness. Local anesthesia is used to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during the surgery. This procedure generally takes around one to two hours.
What Should I Expect in Terms of Recovery?
Recovery after injectable lip augmentation is very manageable, with most patients returning to work and their other daily activities within a day or two. You may experience some minor bruising and swelling, but this should subside rather quickly.
Recovery after surgical lip augmentation, on the other hand, requires a bit more downtime. You can expect to have some swelling, but this should go down within five days of your procedure. Most people resume their normal work schedule and daily activities within a week.

Lip Augmentation FAQs
-
Are There Any Risks Involved?
Risks involved with lip augmentation depend on the type of procedure you are having. Generally, the risks associated with lip augmentation include bleeding, swelling, bruising, changes in sensation, lip asymmetry, infection, and scarring.
You can mitigate these risks by choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in administering lip injections and performing lip augmentation surgery, such as Dr. Sanders.
-
Will I Need to Request Extensive Time Off from Work?
There is no need to request time off from work after lip injections. In fact, many patients will get lip fillers on their lunch breaks and return to work afterward. Regarding surgical lip augmentation, you may want to take one or two days off from work to rest. However, if you work remotely, this may not be necessary, as you can rest and heal while working from the comfort of your own home.
-
How Long Will My Results Last?
Lip fillers tend to last between 12 to 18 months, depending on the type of filler substance and how quickly your body metabolizes the filler. The lip implants used for Dr. Sanders’ surgical lip augmentation are designed to last for decades. In some cases, a follow-up treatment may be required to restore your initial results.
