The Procedure Process Explained

Learn more about the eyelid surgery process below, including what your eyelid surgery consultation will involve, procedure preparation, what surgery is like, and what you can expect during your eyelid recovery.

The Consultation

Your eyelid surgery consultation with Dr. Sanders is the first step to achieving beautiful, natural-looking results. During your consultation, Dr. Sanders will examine your eyes and eyelids, ask questions to learn more about your unique needs and cosmetic goals, and make professional recommendations on how you can achieve those goals with eyelid surgery.

This is also an ideal opportunity to get to know Dr. Sanders and ask about his background, education, and experience performing eyelid surgery. Dr. Sanders follows a patient-centered approach and is here to ensure you feel comfortable in his skills and ability to deliver exceptional eyelid surgery results.

What Should I Do in Preparation?

Like any other plastic surgery, you will achieve better results if you are in good health. Dr. Sanders recommends his patients prepare for their eyelid surgery by adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a nutritious diet and regular exercise.

Additionally, he recommends you stop all smoking, alcohol intake, and the use of blood-thinning medication, such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen.

Before your procedure, Dr. Sanders will provide more detailed preparation instructions to ensure you are ready for your surgery.

What is Surgery Like?

Generally, eyelid surgery involves removing excess fat and skin from eyelids (either the upper or lower, or both), tightening the eyelid muscle, and surgical lifting of the eyelid for a rejuvenated appearance.

This procedure is performed under IV sedation or local anesthesia and takes approximately one to two hours to complete. Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, which means you will be discharged and sent home on the day of surgery.

What Should I Expect in Terms of Recovery?

After your eyelid surgery, you may wake up with blurry vision. This is completely normal and to be expected. Additionally, you will likely experience dry eyes and minor swelling. To address this, Dr. Sanders will prescribe antibiotic cream and may recommend you use artificial teardrops to alleviate any eye dryness.

For swelling, he may recommend the use of a cold compress and that you maintain an upright position for the first week of your recovery; avoid lying down and sleep with extra pillows behind your head.

Recovery after eyelid surgery lasts for one to two weeks. You should avoid any strenuous activities during this time. Dr. Sanders will provide you with more detailed aftercare and recovery instructions based on your unique procedure and treatment plan.
