Even in a climate like Southern California, where we enjoy beautiful weather year-round, the transition from summer to fall is accompanied by a slight dip in temperatures and a chill in the air. As the seasons change, you might want to think about tweaking your skin care routine as well. Read on as Dr. George Sanders shares his best summer to fall skin care tips.
Switch Up Your Moisturizer
During the sweltering summer months, you probably used a lightweight moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. As the air gets cooler and drier, your moisturizer needs to shift, too. Trade out your lightweight moisturizer for a heavier cream with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or aloe vera. Applying the richer moisturizer morning and night should help keep your skin adequately hydrated.
Add in a Face Mask
If your skin feels parched even with a heavier moisturizer, add in a creamy face mask a few times a week to amp up the hydration. Some skin care companies actually offer “overnight” face masks that stay on the skin while you sleep. If you don’t like the idea of a mask, add a facial oil to your skin care routine for an extra dose of moisture.
Avoid Steaming Hot Showers
Though it can feel great to take a hot, steaming shower in the colder fall months, hot water can strip your skin of oils and lead to parched or scaly skin. Aim for warm or lukewarm (not hot) water when showering and washing your face. Or, cut your shower time down to reduce the amount of hot water that comes in contact with your skin.
Keep Up Your Sun Protection Routine
One element of your skin care routine that should never change is protecting yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. Even in cooler months, it’s critical to take sun protection seriously. Make sure you apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher whenever going outside. For added protection, swap out your straw sunhat for a trendy fedora or Panama hat to shield your face from the sun.
